Australia Day 2026 Honours List

March 2, 2026 | General

This year the Australia Day Honours list included 13 Illawarra residents, with one of those being our own Ian Mackay. Ian was recognised for decades of community involvement through organisations including Lions Club of Figtree, Illawarra Cancer Carers, local sporting clubs and service groups.

Ian was also acknowledged by Professor G.Q. Max Lu, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Wollongong:

“It gives me great pleasure to extend my heartfelt congratulations on being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for your outstanding service to the community of the Illawarra.

This well-deserved recognition is a testament to your remarkable record of leadership and community commitment over many decades. From your early involvement as a foundation member and President of the University of Wollongong Cricket Club, to your enduring contributions through the Lions Club of Figtree and the Illawarra Cancer Carers, you have exemplified the values of generosity, integrity and dedication to others.

The University of Wollongong is especially proud of your enduring association with our community. Your leadership with the Illawarra Cancer Carers, and their long history of philanthropic support for pioneering cancer research at UOW – from the work of Professor Philip Clingan to that of Professor Marie Ranson, Associate Professor Kara Vine-Perrow and many others – has made an indelible impact on the health and wellbeing of countless people in our region.

As one of our distinguished alumni, completing your Bachelor of Science in 1965, your continued service and contribution reflect the very best of what it means to be part of the UOW family. Your recognition with an OAM is a fitting acknowledgement of a lifetime devoted to making the Illawarra a stronger and more compassionate community.

On behalf of the University of Wollongong, please accept my sincere congratulations and gratitude for your exemplary service.”

The letter from the University of Wollongong says it all – you are a “Community Champion” Ian – an unsung hero who has gone above and beyond to make a positive difference in your local community.

Congratulations Ian! All members of the Illawarra Cancer Carers are extremely proud of your accomplishments and this extremely well deserved award.
