PET SCAN PETITION TABLED: 26,066 SIGNATURES

Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has today tabled a petition in New South Wales Parliament for PET scanner at Wollongong Hospital with 26,066 signatures of support.

Mr Ward said he was extremely honoured to table the petition in Parliament and acknowledged his Illawarra colleagues from both sides of politics.

"I want to make it very clear that this has always been a bipartisan effort and above politics for every Illawarra MP," he said.

"I acknowledge the Speaker and Member for South Coast Shelley Hancock, Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson, Member for Wollongong Noreen Hay, Member for Heathcote Lee Evans and the Member for Keira Ryan Park.

"I congratulate the tremendous efforts of Keith Wilson and the team at Illawarra Cancer Carers who have led this petition and also Fay Campbell and the Illawarra PET Committee," Mr Ward said.

Illawarra Cancer Carers spokesman Keith Wilson who has led the petition in the community, said he was extremely proud of the resounding support they have received from right across the Illawarra community.

"The Illawarra Cancer Carers are incredibly proud of the campaign thus far for this important piece of medical equipment which is so badly needed for Wollongong Hospital," he said.

"We are extremely hopeful that we will see a positive result in the Parliament.

"I would like to acknowledge the countless individual cancer carers that signed the petition along with everybody in the community who have shown us tremendous support as well," Mr Wilson said.

Chairperson of the Illawarra PET Committee, Fay Campbell welcomed the news.

"This project is one where both sides of politics have worked together for the common good of the community," she said.

"I commend the politicians for their commitment and dedication to our project for this machine.

"The community response has been incredibly overwhelming.

"The campaign is ongoing and we will not rest until we have completed our mission," Mrs Campbell said.
