HISTORY
Illawarra Cancer Carers (ICC) was formed in 1990 after a group of volunteers got together after raising $1.5 million in a TV Appealathon to help purchase a new linear accelerator so patients didn’t need to make a daily trip to Sydney for radiotherapy.
The catalyst came when one of the patients travelling to Sydney for radiotherapy promised his father he would raise the funds to get a new linear accelerator for the Illawarra.
Since then the ICC has raised more than $5 million which has been spent only in the Illawarra on purchasing special equipment for the Wollongong Cancer Care Centre or for cancer research projects at the University of Wollongong.
As well, the ICC financially supports fortnightly Lymphoedema clinics, conducted by volunteers, and the NSW Health’s Palliative Care Unit at Bulli Hospital.
