Our 30th Anniversary Luncheon

On Saturday the 29th of May 2021, we held our 30th Anniversary Luncheon at Corrimal Leagues Club. 2021 is our 31st year, but due to COVID restrictions last year, we were unable to hold the luncheon then. There were over 80 people, past and present Carers and friends there and it was a lovely day. A lot of the Carers who hadn’t seen each other for a number of years were reunited again for a few hours and a lot of memories were talked about on the day.

Ian Mackay was the Emcee on the day and a great job he did. Special thanks also to Judy Mackey, Yvonne White and all the organisers. We had our President Geoff Failes make a great speech as well as Professor Marie Ransom from IHMRI/UOW who the Carers have donated a lot of funds to over the years.

A big thankyou also to Allen and the Corrimal RSL CLub for their, as always, great food and great atmosphere. Also Priceline Wollongong, The i98 Illawarra Convoy and our sewing group for their donations.

Also a few words about the ongoing work the Cancer Carers are doing…..

Our latest donations taken the total dispersed to more than $4.8 million since our organisation began its operations more than 30 years ago.

Importantly, ALL of the money has been spent in the Illawarra.

More than $140,000 has gone towards the purchase of a special tumour detecting machine at Wollongong Hospital so cancer patients no longer have to travel to Sydney for a scan.

The grant, which has been matched by a group of Illawarra Doctors, funded the purchase of a Dotatate PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scanner which is used to find and diagnose neuroendocrine tumours.

Much of that $140,000 came from our Banquet at the Beach fundraiser which was at The City Beach Function Centre and from a number of special pledges from donors.

The Glitz and Glamour Ball also raised more than $65,000 for cancer research.

Funds raised from the 2019 Banquet at the Beach also went towards Port Kembla Hospital Pallative Care Unit, Breast Cancer Illawarra and the David Berry Hospital.

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS AND WE HOPE IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE, COVID RESTRICTIONS WILL EASE AND ALLOW US TO AGAIN WORK TOGETHER IN THE VARIOUS AREAS TO PROVIDE CARE TO OUR CANCER PATIENTS.
