About Us

Illawarra Cancer Carers (ICC) was formed in 1990 after a group of volunteers got together after raising $1.5 million in a TV Appealathon to help purchase a new linear accelerator so patients didn’t need to make a daily trip to Sydney for radiotherapy.

The catalyst came when one of the patients travelling to Sydney for radiotherapy promised his father he would raise the funds to get a new linear accelerator for the Illawarra.

Fundraising

We are a not for profit organisation. We receive donations from a number of sources. These include funerals, major annual fundraising events, bequests, government and semi-government grants, groups, individuals and company donations. Many donations also are made from former cancer patients and their families/carers.

As well, an active sewing and craft group meets weekly to make products which are sold at local markets or shopping centres. Volunteers also collect gold coin donations from Christmas and Mother’s Day gift wrapping services at local shopping centres. For details on the sewing and craft group please phone 0414 280 127.

The i98FM Illawarra Convoy, through its Illawarra Community Foundation, has been a major donor and supporter of the ICC. To date they have given us two vehicles; a 22 seater bus and a van used for transporting our mobility equipment, as well as $54,000 towards offsetting the cost of reimbursing drivers for their fuel expenses.
